Yes, they open up and sound better with time. You will notice the biggest difference in sound after the first 3-4 months, but already after 1-2 weeks.

Here's a rough guide.

  • 4 – 7 years: 1/4 size violin
  • 6-10 years : 1/2 size violin
  • 9-11 years:  3/4 size violin
  • 10 – elderly: 4/4 = full size violin
