What does B-stock mean?
Every now and then we receive an instrument from our workshop with a visual imperfection. The instrument might have a small nick, scratch or a miss-coloration in the varnish. These visual issues do not affect the performance or playability of the instrument. However, we would never put these instruments into our regular inventory.
Just like every other Fiddlerman instrument we sell, this instrument is set up by our talented luthiers and is covered by our warranties.
We have a limited stock of these instruments. Every instrument has a different imperfection

Our founder Pierre Holstein (a.k.a. "Fiddlerman") works directly with makers in many different countries to produce only the best for our customers. With over 40 years as a professional violinist in orchestras around the world, he brings unmatched expertise in music and business to everything we do.
We buy our violas directly from the maker - a rare business practice that lowers our cost so we can pass the savings on to you! Every Fiddlerman viola is set up and tested in our workshop to make sure it passes our rigorous 10-point inspection. Our incredibly talented team is here to help answer any questions you have, and make sure your instrument arrives safely.
I received my 15” B-stock Apprentice Viola today, and all I can say is Wow! I am so happy with my viola! I am a long time violinist, first time violist! But I was able to easily transpose my violin pieces to viola. Now all I need to learn is how to read alto/viola clef …lol. So below are my impressions about the B-stock Apprentice Viola outfit: The Viola: Appearance: This is a B-stock, but I would not have seen where the defect was if Fiddlershop did not tell me where it was. To me this speaks volumes about Fiddlershop’s quality control on their instruments. I am impressed. The viola was beautiful to look at — much better in person than in pictures. Setup: Kudos to the luthier who set my viola up. The pegs were very easy to turn. The viola itself was very easy to play. I had very little trouble adjusting my playing from violin to my viola. The Sound: The viola sounded beautiful! My viola was loud with a deep, and bold sound. I love the growl on the C and G strings when I called for it. The sound was very even throughout the strings. I also love the resonance that it produced. I am truly a very happy camper. I couldn’t stop playing my viola! Surprisingly, I liked the D’Addario Prelude strings that came with the viola. I don’t recall ever using steel core strings on my violin (well maybe when I was a kid), so I wasn’t so sure what to expect with these strings. But I was pleasantly surprised to hear how warm they are, and how pliable they were under my finger tips. Don't let the "Apprentice" name of the viola fool you. This is a very capable viola that is good enough to perform with, in my opinion. The Bow: The violin came with Fiddlerman’s carbon fiber bow. I like the balance on this bow. It did not feel heavy at all. It was very responsive, and produced a very nice sound on the instrument. I was able to put color on the music I was playing using this bow. And mind you, I’ve never played the viola before! Needless to say, I was very impressed with this bow. The Shoulder Rest: My viola came with a Fiddlerman Shoulder Rest. I love this shoulder rest. It was very comfortable to use on my viola. The shoulder rest was also nice to look at. Thanks, Fiddlershop! Rosin: The outfit came with Fiddlerman Select Rosin. I have my own preference in rosins, so I don’t know yet how I feel about this rosin. The Case: I received a Fiddlerman case. The case was lightweight. It had 2 compartments, and 2 bow holders. I do not have any complaints about the case. I am very happy with it. This case will serve me many years for sure! Packaging: Top notch! No complaints. I was able to track my shipment, and it arrived on time, with no issues. Customer Service: Always first-class!!! Thanks to Asa, Cameron, and Michael O., for making my buying experience with Fiddlershop a very good and pleasant one! Conclusion: I can’t stress enough how happy I am with my Apprentice viola - the sound, the way it looks, the bow, the shoulder rest, and the case. Fiddlershop has been my “go to” violin shop, and I will keep recommending them to everyone who asks me for a trustworthy violin shop. Thank you, Fiddlershop!
