I bought this rosin as a beginner not understanding anything about playing the violin other than you need to put rosin on the bow to play. I just wanted something cheap called rosin. I know as beginners, my son and I would be scratchy and not sound very good so I didn't think anything about sounding scratchy and squawky. We are now getting to the point I thought we should start sounding better and I have been doing more research, I decided to upgrade my violin and got a better rosin with it, and I was blown away by how most of the scratching went away. I thought it was because of the new violin and bow, so I decided to try my old setup with the new rosin and the scratchy-squawk wasn't there either. In my opinion it was due to this rosin not working for me. My son and I now play with the other rosin instead of this and our playing is so much better.

This seems to be fine rosin. The reason for my 1* review is for the wooden case that you hold in your hand when drawing the bow across the rosin. The rosin does not come all the way to the sides of the wooden case, so the outside hairs of the bow fall into the crack formed there and breaks (or pulls loose) one or more of the hairs each time I try to use it, making the rosin useless. Stick with better rosin that does not come in a hard case.
