SAS Chinrest -Original Model Violin - Ebony or Rosewood
* Please note that the rosewood used for this chinrest is of a very light color, as shown in the main picture.
New SAS chin rest is remarkable, allowing for modern playing technique without affecting the individuality of handling the instrument. Its fabrication is compact, yet perfectly elegant design. Available in 4 different heights 24, 28, 32, 35mm to suit almost everyone. The rest can be adjusted to pivot towards the left or right of the violin.
The importance of wood as natural material without varnish is conspicuous, while the precious metal segment is goldplated. It is therefore health-conscious, as the chin piece is in constant touch with the skin. The new chin piece is superb and ideal also because it reaches over the tail piece. This way it offers several manners of holding the instrument. It is fixed above the violin block and it could be tightly screwed in. This model of chin piece is definitely going to become popular very soon, as it is suitable for everybody, from complete beginners to professionals.
Available in two wood materials:
I was experiencing a lot of shoulder pain due to squeezing to bring my violin up to my jaw--my old chin rest was super short and flat, so I kept trying to raise my shoulder rest to compensate for the height difference. Even though I am using the shortest model, using an SAS has eliminated my shoulder pain. I can now use my shoulder rest on the lowest setting and am more comfortable than I was with my old setup.
In ordering a chinrest, I was unsure if the chinrest would work for a viola as well as violin. I called and got very polite and timely service. The woman went and got the chinrest I was discussing, opened the box and confirmed that it would work. I was impressed with the service, price and speed of delivery!
My experience with Fiddlershop on this purchase was excellent, as always. I ordered the lowest possible height because I don’t consider myself as having particularly long neck. Unfortunatley, with my shoulder rest, it appears to be just a little too low. With my shoulder rest raised high, it still is a little too low. There are some things I do not like about this chin rest. I cannot have it angled like I would like because the end by the tailpiece hits the tailpiece. Not enough clearance. Maybe a taller one would not have that issue, and if my tailpide was flatter that would not be an issue. It cannot be left on the violin and still fit in the case. If it was not so awkward for me to put on, that would not be a problem. But it is and you have to get it back in the spot and at the angle again. It does not really adjust as much as one would think. None of this is by any means a reflection of Fiddlershop. Probably for the more experienced violinist these things would not be an issue, and measurements would have been taken correctly to get the right size. I could have returned it and there would not have been an issue, but I chose to hold on to it. I will either just give it to someone who wants to try it, or maybe find a more suitable shoulder rest to use with it. The choices made when buying were mine, I measured myself. The choice not to return it was mine. Fiddlershop has an excellent return policy. I just don’t like returning items. I had a chinrest given to me right after I ordered this. The person giving it to me even paid the shipping. If I decide I definitely do not want it, I will just give this one to someone. But, I will wait until I am sure. Kudos to Fiddlershop for terrific customer service.
Finally decided to try the SAS chinrest. Should have gotten it rears ago. I couldn't be happier with a chinrest. For me it's PERFECT. And the Fiddlershop is beyond outstanding to do business with ! Thanks Fiddlershop.
If I had known how difficult it was to find a comfortable setup for violin I may have opted for cello. Finding the right chinrest just takes a lot of trial and error. SAS is great for the extreme range of fitting options but ultimately it wasn’t right for me. Nicely designed and built, a good solution for some violinists and great service from Fiddlershop
