Introduction

The people at Arcus have developed the Müsing Bows to offer a new level of performance to the more affordable price range. Compared to wooden bows, they offer improved resiliency (elasticity) and they deliver a wider range of overtones than basic composite bows. They are designed to match the demands of all advancing students, amateurs, and professional players who seek an affordable bow with perfect strength and a really good sound.

Improving the sound of basic composite bows...

On the lower end of the market, composite bows are increasingly replacing wooden bows. They generally offer good resiliency and are more durable. Their biggest problem is that with their high resin content of about 60% (40% is carbon fiber) the high frequency overtones are greatly dampened. Initially the sound of such bows appears to be quite full and warm, but after a longer period of playing the lack of brilliance in the sound becomes very obvious and unacceptable. For this reason, better players with trained ears rarely play low end carbon fiber bows.

...Through a New Technology

Until now the ARCUS bows were the only composite bows that offered better resonance than wooden bows. That is only possible because of a low resin content of about 20% (80% carbon fibers). But these bows are very difficult to make and labor intensive and cannot be produced at a low cost or in large quantities

For the Müsing bows, Arcus has developed a new manufacturing technology: the shaft is made from 3D-woven carbon fibers and then infused with epoxy under high pressure. This way they achieve a relatively low resin content of about 40% (60% carbon fibers) the result is a resonance quality similar to high quality Pernambuco.

High Tech Made in Germany

The Müsing bows are entirely made in Germany and come with a 15-year warranty for the stick. This warranty is not limited to the orignal owner, as some manufacturers' warranties are, but can be transferred

I loved being the Musing bow and the Arcus T5 bow.

I was very pleased to be able to compare the Musing bow and the Arcus T5 bows. I made a recording playing my bow, the Musing bow and the Arcus T5 bow playing the same songs. I then had a musician friend listen to the recordings and tell me which bow sounded better on my fiddle. He did not know which bow was which, but said the third bow made the best. That was the Arcus T5. It was impossible for me to tell the difference when I was playing the songs live. But, in the recordings, I really heard a difference with the Musing and T5 bows. I ended up buying the Arcus T5. I have worked on one fiddle tune for 40 years and have never been totally satisfied with how it sounded. This bow makes that tune sound much better. As I get used to the bow, I believe all my songs will sound better. It allows me to play up the neck with a much clearer sound.

Fiddlershop facilitated a quick drop shipment from the factory and provided all the support I needed for the purchase of one bow and the return of another. The C5 musing violin bow was nearly the playing equal of my pernambuco bow costing 5 times as much, although I preferred my heavier pernambuco viola bow sound to the musing viola C5 on my viola. As each pairing depends on many factors, it is important to trial many bows in a single session with your instrument.

Fantastic intermediate student bow

I was playing with an entry-level carbon fiber bow, and struggling with string crossing in fast passages, double-stops, and off-the-string bow strokes. With the C3, everything just happened smoothly. So playability-wise, this bow is fantastic! Additionally, this bow is a great match for my warm sounding violin, without any that typical carbon fiber bow metallic sound. (I tried a few CodaBow models in my local violin shop and didn't like the sound at all.)

Great bows.

I tried the C4 and C5 but eventually splurged and got something in the M series. I would have been totally happy with any of these bows if I hadn't requested costlier bows in my batch of bows to try. The C5 in particular drew a really amazing sound out of my violin. It was a really artful and expressive sound. I am recovering from a stroke, and was having trouble with getting my vibrato back. The C5 seemed to enhance what limited movement I had. It also drew a really powerful projecting sound. C4 was totally respectable too. The following were some reviews that I found helpful. 1) From the founder of Arcus bows who put his own name on this line of bows: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1JDvKcOR8FY 2)Solo violinist Giedrė Mundinaitė-Leenhouwers gives her review of the musing line of bows: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFalr79BI_Q 3) Same violinist actually prefers the Musing C5 over an Arcus S4. See her comment around 5:40. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCUyH1WRwxo&t=504s
