Great second instrument

I was a bit wary of making an internet violin purchase, but after weeks of reviewing the instruments on YouTube and making comparisons, I chose to purchase the Ole Bull. The price was reasonable and service excellent. Having it shipped across the USA made me a bit nervous, but it arrived quickly, and in perfect condition. From the moment I lifted it out of it's case I was happy! The instrument is really beautiful to look at, and the first time the bow crossed the strings I knew I had made a good choice for a second instrument. My current 1889 German violin is being worked on and I didn't want to be without an instrument for long! I'm very happy with the warm resonant sound the Ole Bull makes, it's G and D strings much warmer and darker than my other violin. The A and E strings are lighter, and not as resonant, but still very nice. The violin is very easy to play and projects well in a large room. I'm very happy with my purchase. I did have to switch out the chin rest as my previous C spine surgery is aggravated by the higher arch in the shop chin rest. I'm delighted with the service and care Fiddlershop gave me in this purchase. I would definitely purchase from them again.

Kind of boxy, guys...

Well, I'll start off by saying that I received top notch customer service from the team at fiddlershop and I'll order from here again. That being said...: The strings that came with this outfit (and the instrument itself) were very boxy sounding. The G and D strings were loud and sonorous with a balanced sound, only it sounded like I was playing inside of a box in a tunnel with no cars in it. The A string was completely boxy and dead sounding. The E string was not -as- dead as the A string, but it was as bad as the A string in all aforementioned ways. So, I changed out the default strings for a standby pack of Larsen Il Cannone Solo strings, and it improved the sound slightly, but it did not improve the overall boxiness of the sound in general. The G and D strings sound even better with the Il Cannone strings and with plenty of harmonics (especially in a church setting), but still boxy and stifled. The A string (my most important string) still remains the worst of all 4 strings as the sound it produces still remains boxy, dead, and wholly unremarkable :-( . The E string, once changed to a Pirastro No. 1 string, did sound quite amazing. I play with an Arcus A4 bow fyi. I purchased this fiddle to replace a 600$ Karl Hofner No. 7 student violin. I can honestly say that after spending only 1 day with with this instrument, it does not really compare to my current violin i.e. the student violin sounds better. I'm looking into getting the plates tuned as soon as I can.

Beautiful Instrument - SUPER happy with it...

I few weeks ago I purchased an Ole Bull violin from Fiddlershop. I absolutely love it. Packaged extremely well for shipment. Arrived *perfectly* set up - the pegs are so incredibly well fitted, tuning is a breeze. Lovely sound - the strings are well matched to the violin. The finish on the violin is great. I am thrilled with it. Tremendous value for the price.

Ah, the Ole'

Ah, the Ole' Bull, my second Fiddlershop violin and once again a credit to the shop. Every Fiddlershop violin I have purchased has been a joy to own and the Ole' Bull is, in every aspect, just as sweet. The instrument responds very nicely and has a very warm tone that entices me back to it even though I have several, even more expensive, instruments. The feel and sound and responsiveness are almost emotional, the grain and flaming of the wood are gorgeous. Truly a pleasure to own, to hear, and to play.

I love my

I love my Ole Bull. I've had it for 4 months and it's settled in nicely. It's extremely responsive and resonant, and the action is low enough to feel very responsive without being spongy. It's super sensitive to rosin, so choose a quality rosin and use sparingly or you will hear every sandy residue noise because there is no hiding with this violin). The G string has a deep Gypsy growl, and the E is sweet. It says it comes with Ammo strings, and they actually put Dominants on with a Lenzner E, likely because it was dark enough as is. Sounds great. I will say, if you plan to change the chin rest, let Fiddlershop know. They'll be happy to take the old one off and touch up whatever the varnish needs before shipping. I wish I had done that. In all, I'm super happy for not only what I got for the price, but with the customer service and quality kindness of the fiddlershop family. How can you get better from the internet? Seriously.
