Larsen(Original)/Spirocore(Tungsten) Cello Combo

In October of 2022 I upgraded from my "student" wood cello, purchasing the Forte Carbon Fiber 3D cello from Fiddlershop. At the time it came with Helicore strings and it, indeed, sounded very impressive with those. However, I long ago contracted the Cellist-Searching-For-The-Perfect-String-Combination virus, so since that time I have experimented with various individual and combinations of strings, some expensive, some not. I found many that worked well on the Forte... it is a very resonant instrument and quite forgiving even when you subject it to low-level strings. No matter what combination I tried, there was always something lacking... warmth, sweetness, volume, subtlety... it seemed always a trade-off, and that fact didn't seem unreasonable, as all engineering endeavors are trade-offs. I had never pulled the lever on the Larsen/Spirocore set, even though it is THE go-to setup for so many cellists. When Fiddlershop put them on sale recently, I caved and ordered the set. My Forte has been transformed into a sound cannon. The set is well-balanced when moving from string to string. The Spirocore C and G stings will make your pantlegs flap. The Larsen A is the sweetest, warmest sounding A I have ever used, no high frequency harshness whatsoever, and can still take over the stage when you want it to. The Larsen D is powerful and rich all the way up the neck. I have had a love/hate relationship (mostly hate, actually), with every D string on every cello I've played. Most often they sound fine near the bottom, and run away and hide when moving up the neck. Not so the Larsen... it maintains its richness and projection all the way to the top. In short, these have taken a cello which naturally has a sound WAY above its price point to begin with, and has kicked it into the stratosphere. Every cello is different, and reacts in a very unique way to various string combinations, so I can't say they would make such a drastic improvement on all instruments... but at least for now, my search has ended. Thank you Fiddlershop! Mark McNeil West Bath, ME
