The primary reasons we prefer the 017 from other student level instruments is that it is completely hand made with a traditional oil finish, has an ebony fingerboard with rosewood fittings, and is set up and strung with Dominant Strings. We prefer the oil finish as it is far more durable than the alternative high gloss spray finishes, which tend to chip and splinter. The oil finish also allows the woods of the violin to resonate freely which produces a better tone. Additionally, most inexpensive instruments use painted soft woods for the fingerboard and tuning pegs. The soft tuning pegs can flex and slip, which result in the violin being constantly out of tune while the fingerboard will wear and warp, rendering the instrument unplayable. The Scott Cao 017 has a hardwood ebony fingerboard and rosewood tuning pegs, ensuring the violin plays correctly and in tune for years.

I received my Scott Cao 017 Violin outfit today and it was far greater than my expectations. For under $500 this is a steal. It looks wonderful, sounds amazing, and feels very comfortable. The pictures and videos do not do it justice. The customer service I received was outstanding. Every question I had was answered and my requests were fulfilled. When I received the violin I noticed that there was a lot of care put into it, from the bit of graphite under the strings to make them move smoothly to the extremely secure bridge guard in the shipping process, care was definitely applied. This is a violin I had a hard time putting down after a long practice session because I still wanted to play it more! Exactly what I wanted in a violin. I highly recommend this violin, especially from Fiddlershop! 5/5
Very happy with my Scott Cao 017. It gets better and better the more I play it. Great for loud pubs. It really gets through when playing with several other fiddles, accordian, guitars, mandolins, etc.. There is something really tough and solid about them. I use it for trad. music and will eventually give it to my daughter when she's a bigger so I can get a Scott Cao STV 850 Ysaye. I'm addicted!
I received a warped bow but the customer service replaced it with an upgraded fiber glass bow right away. Highly recommended!
After researching a lot about violins for beginners I decided on this one because it was of good quality and it was affordable as far as violins go. The sound quality sounds good (keep in mind that I do not have that much experience with violin), and the violin looks great. The pegs do not slip easily (which should be one of your priorities when buying a violin) and overall it looks like it will last for a few years. The only complaint that I have is that the pegs and the chin rest are black, and I expected them to look brown like in the pictures. Looks do not make a difference when playing an instrument, but it was disappointing nevertheless, especially after paying over 500 dollars.
