This violin, number 262, is Peter White’s most recent instrument-completed in July 2021. Peter is a European trained violin maker who works in the historical tradition of the Italian masters. He has won multiple gold medals for workmanship and tone in American violins makers’ contests and two gold medals for his work in Cremona Italy in 2010.
This particular violin is a Guarneri del Gesu template made with European spruce and Bosnian quilted maple, finished with the oil varnish he makes himself, soft, transparent and beautiful. The tone of this violin is warm and clear, powerful in its projection and well balanced. It is easy to play and suitable for serious amateurs, advanced students or symphony musicians.
The back of the violin is one-piece maple slab cut. The intensity of the "bird's eye" flaming is brought out by Peter's use of the UV light box he personally constructed. Each violin spends weeks in the light box, which simulates the light of the sun, and imitates the timeless tradition that luthiers have been using by hanging violins in front of the window before varnishing.
The process of applying the oil varnish, however is Peter's distinguishing work. Completely hand made, it is a light orange-brown, with a hint of red and replicates the look and template of Stradivari's violins. The varnish will continue to harden and meld with the wood over the coming months/years, strengthening the instrument and improving the sound.
