Wittner pegs vs Planetary Perfection pegs.

I've bought and installed both pegs in various violins, and both look and act very similar to each other. 1. Wittners are easier to install because they go in without glue whereas Planetary needs a dab of glue. 2. Price is exactly the same. 3. Wittner's requires eight turns for each real turn while Planetary requires just four. It's painful getting new strings onto Wittner's unless you have a quick spinner, but then they allow for far easier adjustment once strung. 4. Planetary's function as traditional pegs, that is, pull them out, adjust, push them back in. Wittner's function like guitar tuners. I prefer the Planetary's because of the faster turning and traditional friction feels, but both function equally effectively. You do need: Tin Snipes for cutting the ends off. Nail file for polishing the ends. Measurement calipers to order the right size. Reamer for perfectly sizing the holes. Just push the pegs in not very hard (they have teeth so they stick better than friction pegs), and wiggle them in gently until they are firm. Remove by pushing the opposite side, cut and polish ends, reinsert and you're done!

Amazingly wonderful!

I was somewhat apprehensive about trying to install these in a very old violin but because we live in a very remote part of our state, I had to try to do it myself. I watched the youtube videos on how to do it. Just be very careful not to ream out too much at a time ......go very slowly and check and recheck often. It was not that hard at all.....the hardest part was cutting the ends off! My husband has recently become disabled and was completely unable to tune his violin, but now he can do it with no trouble at all AND it stays in tune much better. These things are simply amazing and I highly recommend them!!

Where have these pegs been all of my life?

Even with the finest pegs installed by the greatest luthiers, humidity and dryness affect the pegs ability to turn smoothly in a friction, wood to wood setting. This has been a source of frustration to string players for years, especially cellists. These pegs turn effortlessly and bring the pitch up or down gradually. Losing my fine tuner on the tailpiece also enables my instrument to vibrate more freely.

What A Wonderful Alternative!

These are amazing. I plan to put them on my other violin eventually. The recommendation is to use a luthier for installation. I think this is wise for anyone who isn't particularly handy. Even for someone who is handy, just remember smaller holes are best. Some violins require a 1:30 reamer. The pegs are less resistant to friction going in. ALWAYS make the hole a bit smaller just in case.Keep trying the fit. Make them too large and you have a problem. Wittner has a fix if you slip up. It isn't a first option though, hence the luthier recommendation. If you have doubts use a luthier. After installing my first set I am confident to do it again, but I'm handy. If you aren't don't try it.

Wittner Finetune Geared Pegs

I revently purchased a Fiddlerman Soloist violin. I'm 71 years old and this is my first violin. Tuning was difficult with only the E string fine tuner. So I did my homework and ordered the Wittner tuner pegs. I'm also a "do it your selfer". I ordered the correct reamer and went to work on my expensive violin. All went well and now my violin tunes perfectly in a matter of seconds. I highly recommend them.
