Favorite Bow

The bow arrived early and was in perfect condition. When I got it out of the wrapping, I could tell it felt right in my hand. I haven't experienced that before. I usually like a heavier bow but this one doesn't need the weight to make a great viola sound. As I have practiced and played in a couple of rehearsals, I have found it meets all of my needs and is now my favorite bow. It makes practice fun again. Fiddlerman was correct when he said this is a great bow for the money. It definitely is.

Wonderful Bow

I was looking for a wooden bow to complement my CodaBow Diamond NX, which I love. I looked at several and decided to try the Holstein 3-star. It exceeded my expectations: a strong, well-balanced round stick; beautiful fittings; a strong yet mellow sound, and great response both on and off the string. It's a pleasure to play and holds up well next to the Coda. I had a friend try it, who is both a concertmaster and a principal violist, and he liked it a lot. I highly recommend this bow. Plus, the staff at Fiddlershop were happy to communicate with me and find out what I wanted.

A Bow that rewards your efforts!

As a senior adult beginner whose only bow experience was violin bows in Elementary through High School and private lessons, I had zero experience using a heavier bow. I thought a heavier bow might not be the best for my senior shoulders and that I would have to sacrifice tone for comfort. However, I read the good reviews and this bow went on sale so I bought one. It was a quick and easy process with fast shipping. The box the bow came in showed respect for what was inside. And it is a pretty little bow! I still have my violin bows which were refreshed recently and were used with my new little viola, so I made a comparison prior to trying it out. My two violin bows weigh 54 grams each, and my new Holstein 3-star Pernambuco Viola bow weighs 75 grams using the same scale. While the hair length was the same, the overall length of the Holstein viola bow is a half inch longer than the two violin bows. The quantity of hair in all three bows appears to be the same? I could feel the increased weight when I picked the viola bow up. I played my viola with it a little each day, not really sure if I was going to like this bow. After a while, the viola bow did not feel heavy! Later, I started to sound better (btw, this bow draws a bigger, darker tone than the violin bow draws, which I expected). Today I decided to experiment with bowing at the tip of the bow, because I am uncomfortable doing that. Found a uTube video of a violinmasterclassdotcom teacher instructing his young student in a careful approach towards learning a sautille. I never learned a sautille stroke when I was young. Started a tremelo with only wrist movement and two fingers on the bow. Played a tremelo at the frog and moved up until it bounced. Played a C Major scale hitting each note 8 times. Not perfect but real progress! Just for fun, I started to make the bow bounce at 4 inches from the tip on the C string.. Using wrist only and all the hair, I could make it bounce fairly regularly and with some control over where it landed. What a confidence builder! Now to work on keeping my shoulder relaxed and life learning the viola will be good.

Quick n easy. Got it in the mail quickly but now.... My Great niece won't get it until this winds down. Looks beautiful but then I don't play. Being careful with it until I can deliver to TRINE.

The perfect bow

When I ordered my soloist viola, I went ahead and ordered the Holstein 3-star Pernambuco bow. It is an outstanding value; a bow that is far superior to anything in its price range. The weight is ideal, and the moment I picked it up, I was confident of the control it would give me. It is responsive and has a supple readiness that is delightful. To top if off, it is lovely to look at. You won't regret choosing this bow.
