The Fiddlerman Iron Violin Practice Mute is a rubber coated mute, made in two pieces. With this mute you will retain the sound quality, while dampening the sound significantly. This mute is unique with its beautiful walnut wood look finish.
Material: Iron covered with a thin layer of rubber
Dimensions: 55mm wide, 28mm tall, opening for bridge is 3mm
Weight: 65 grams
Use: Place the mute on the bridge, over the strings. Knock gently with one finger to make the mute grip the bridge and retain a good fit and position when you play.
I own three mutes, a full rubber practice mute, this Iron Mute, and a full metal mute. The full rubber mute wasn't cutting it as far as general practice was concerned and I felt I was still too loud and might eventually annoy my neighbors and roommate. This particular mute brings the volume right down to where I wanted it, though the fully metal mute does a better job at bringing the volume down this one doesn't seem to cause tone issues as much as the full metal one does. There are some differences if you listen closely. This mute also feels more secure on the bridge if, like in the video, you give it a light tap it is very secure. (I still wouldn't go swinging the violin around if on its side). The downside is the same as the full metal one which they are a bit bulky and makes it a little difficult if you are trying to pay attention to your bowing technique. You can't see where the hair contacts the strings, you can still see the stick however. Overall I would not hesitate to recommend this mute for overall volume reduction and minimal loss of intonation.
I love this mute! It lets this beginner play at all hours of the day or night without annoying anyone. Customer service was also great.
I've been very impressed with the Fiddlerman Practice mute! Now I can play at night while my kids are asleep without waking them up or sacrificing a good tone. My violin teacher was also impressed
The ordering and delivery processes were smooth. I was satisfied with the quality of the mute and the price was fair. Having used only a rubber mute before, I didn’t know what to expect. The mute is heavy (rubber coated iron!), but sits stable enough on the bridge. The sound is VERY muted and an instrument could be played in virtually any setting without altering the tone of the violin.
I wasn't expecting such a big difference between two hunks of shaped metal, but this one fits better and more easily, stays on without any trouble (my other one will actually vibrate off the bridge when playing the G string), and its muted sound is much nicer to listen to, without being any louder. Because it fits better, it does seem to scrape the bridge a little bit, but I can't imagine how amazing a player+instrument combination you have to have for that to affect the sound.
