Bow Sizes - Violin, Viola, Cello, and Double Bass

The JonPaul Bow company spent some time making this beautiful chart to provide us with an "easier-to-understand" look at the actual sizes of bows. You'll find that the difference can be pretty big amongst them.

Here's some information that we want to add (please note that some ages overlap, as all kids don't grow at the same rate);

Violin
Violin bows generally weigh around 60 grams.

Sizes and ages
4/4 - 11 years and up
3/4 - 9-12 years
1/2 - 7-9 years
1/4 - 5-7 years
1/8 - 4-6 years
1/16 - 3-5 years

Viola
Viola bows generally weigh around 70 grams.

Sizes and ages
15" or larger - 11 years and up
14" - 9-12 years
13" - 7-9 years
12" - 6-7 years
11" - 5-6 years

Cello
Cello bows generally weigh around 80 grams.

Sizes and ages
4/4 - 14 or older
3/4 - 11-13 years
1/2 - 8-10 years
1/4 - 6-7 years
1/8 - 5-6 years

Double Bass
Double Bass bows generally weigh in between 120-160 grams.

Sizes and ages
3/4 - 13 or older
1/2 - 9-13 years
1/4 - 7-9 years
1/8 - 5-7 years
